Holy Sun Ra, Batman! I’ve been listening to this track off the Batman soundtrack LP by Dan & Dale (actually Sun Ra and The Blues Project) over and over this afternoon - so I figured I might as well rip the LP. Enjoy!

An impossibly rare modern soul track from deep in the heart of Houston, Texas. Leon Mitchison and The Eastex Freeway band are better known for their song “Street Scene” (which is definitely a better track and will set you back a few hundred bucks if you find an original). The track “Houston Town” however seems to be entirely un-google-able so I figured I’d go ahead and rip it and post here.

  3. I Still haven’t managed to get a new scanner to start working on this project again. In the meantime if you’re in Texas this month I’ll be playing records at both my normal monthly event A Fistful of Soul (December 17th) http://www.facebook.com/afistfulofsoul and at Dirty Honey (January 1st) both events are FREE.

At A Fistful of Soul expect to hear soul (northern and otherwise) R&B, and early ska & reggae 45s. At Dirty Honey I’ll be playing mostly rare soul and funk 45s. Both events will feature special guest Modsesitto (from El Clan Soul Society Mexico City)

  4. After what has been a long break (because of a new job, and new house) I will be posting on here again in the next week or so. Thanks so much to everyone for your continued interest.

I finally took the time to figure out how to rip records onto my computer, while this isn’t a blank label, this is a little preview of what’s to come. I had a hell of a time with this track - it was peaking like crazy.

It’s one of my favorite sides and one of the surprisingly few “Liquidator” versions out there.

  7. Hey there y’all. I’m trying desperately to identify two tracks I have on a dubplate/acetate from the late sixties. If you can help or pass this on to someone you know who may be able to I’d really appreciate it. The titles written on the disc are “Don’t Go” and “Call On Me” - I’ve exhausted every resource I know trying to figure this out. The songs are contained in the link.

  8. Lloyd Charmers (as Soul Stirrers) “Come See About Me” - Tramp (FLC 7826) 1969
b/w Llyod Charmers (as Augustus Pablo) “Big Thing” - Tiger (Dyna PW 381-1)

Don’t get me wrong here, Nella Dodd’s original of “Come See About Me” is great but this one by Lloyd Charmers blows it away - top of the top early reggae. The A-side completely overshadows the flip which, while credited to Augustus Pablo, is apparently actually Lloyd Charmers as well. The Augustus Pablo track has also been coupled with songs by both Laurel Aitken and Max Romeo. Nice pink colored label on the A the B has “Instrumental” written in pen.

  9. Prince Buster “Police Trim Rasta” - Prince Buster Records (Dyna PB 4039-1) 1971b/w Prince Buster Allstars “Crystal Blue (Smooth)” - (Dyna PB 4040-1)

A lesser known Prince Buster track from when he was riding the Rasta Bandwagon. It’s still a decent side that I definitely don’t play enough. This copy has circles drawn on the label in green marker presumably to look bad-ass as it spins on the platter. “Jah Live” is also written on the label though I’m unsure if it’s the name of a sound system or a declaration of faith.

  10. The Federals “Penny For Your Song” - Unknown label (US?) (VH - 4000 A1) 1968
    b/w version

A great rocksteady record produced by Derrick Harriot. This short lived group featured the legendary DJ Scotty and this is their most recognizable song, though maybe more from its reworking in the 70s. This pressing of the record is a bit of an oddity. I’m assuming it was a US pressing as the matrix numbers don’t match the UK or JA pressings (maybe from when member Valman Smykle moved to the NY in 1969?) but I can’t find any information on it having been pressed outside of Jamaica or the UK. This record was purchased along with several other from the same collection - most of which were New York pressings of records. “Penny For Your Song (Scott)” stamped on the front along with a name and address written in pen. Also written in pen on both the A and B sides is “Soul Sister”. AWESOME

  11. Count Sticky “Dreadlock” - Matador (FLD 7187) 1970
    b/w Neville Hinds “I Dread” - (FLD 7190-A)

This record from the legendary DJ Count Sticky is a great follow up to the last record posted “Bongo Nyah” - also from Matador. It’s more skin styled reggae with roots lyrics. This one has “Dreadlock” and a Matador company stamp on one side and DJ written all around the other.

  12. Little Roy (as Little Roys) “Bongo Nyah” - Matador (FLD 7970) 1970
b/w Creations “Bad Name” (FLD 7971)

A really common record (Ernie B was selling a bunch of originals on the cheap pretty recently) but great regardless. A skinhead sounding track with roots-y lyrics. “Bongo Nia” written on tape on the A-side - on the flip is the Matador company stamp and “7/6” which I found out, while visiting Deadly Dragon, is a stamp from an old Jamaican jukebox distribution service.
